Nadal leapfrogs Hewitt in world rankings Rafael Nadal stole Lleyton Hewitt's world No.2 ranking on Saturday when he beat Jarkko Nieminen 6-2 7-5 to run his winning streak on clay to 33 matches. The victory lifted the 19-year-old Spaniard into the final of the Mercedes Cup and kept alive a streak, dating back to April, that is the sixth longest on clay. On Sunday, Nadal will face 2004 French Open champion Gaston Gaudio, who advanced when Russia's Nikolay Davydenko pulled out of their semi-final with the flu while trailing 6-3 2-1. "It's a lovely situation to play against him - and try and take his record away," said Gaudio. French Open champion Nadal will pass Hewitt in the rankings when they are updated on Monday. "It's unbelievable for me, but now I will have to play my best tennis to win tomorrow," Nadal said. "Gaudio and I are among the best players in the world on clay, so it will be a good match." With the sun finally shining on the rain-affected event, Nadal broke the 67th-ranked Finn's serve in the first two games of the first set to take command. "He doesn't give you anything. He is concentrated on every point," said Nieminen on his 24th birthday. He hasn't dropped a set in four matches at the event, but he will only face his first seeded player in the final. The third-seeded Argentine, whose fourth title on clay this season came two weeks ago at Gstaad, is one of the few players to have beaten Nadal three times on clay. "But that was when he was, like, 14. Now he is unbeatable on clay," Gaudio said. Gaudio beat Nadal for the last time at Buenos Aires in February, while the Spaniard topped him for the first time at Monte Carlo a month later. Gaudio said no one has been able to find Nadal's weakness on his favorite surface. "If he has one, no one knows. No one can find that shot," Gaudio said. "Mentally he is one of the best on the tour."
